Best of the year – 2. Beara Way

Cashelkeelty stone circle

Recalling my best hiking and sketching memories of 2017

In June and July, I walked all of the Beara way (except Bere Island), wondering why I had not done it before since it is so close to home. I had hot days, wet days and everything in between, which is what one comes to expect in Ireland.

I particularly enjoyed Dursey Island, the many archaeological sites, and the friendly people in the colourful villages along the route. Perhaps the most spectacular section was coming out of Eyeries on a glistening morning and making my way around the coast before the long hike to Lauragh, passing the stone circles at Ardgroom and Cashelkeelty on the way.
