Splendid Isolation – 30

Church of the Epiphany & St Cuthbert, Takaka

This simple little building sits between shops in Takaka’s main street.

Today we walked through the cool shade of the Pupu Hydro Track, emerging from the bush into sunshine high above the valley. It seems a long time ago when we were there before the lockdown, a lot of water has flowed down the leet since then.

I realised that today was the first time I have driven a car for several weeks. We still have a rental car that has spent some expensive days going nowhere and our own sitting in an underground hotel car park in Dublin (fortunately the parking fees have been waived). Emirates now has flights available in July, with face masks and gloves compulsory for the whole flight, but we are waiting for the situation in Ireland to improve before making any decisions about returning home. The thought of sitting in a plane for many hours wearing mask and gloves is not very appealing anyway.

We have found many similarities here to West Cork and Ireland in general. The main difference is the scale of the landscape in which these small buildings sit.
